The average person spends almost a third of their lifetime in the bedroom. Between sleeping, relaxing and rolling in the deep, why wouldn’t it be anything but stellar?

Your bedroom is intended to be a space where you unwind and recharge. Most of you may end up needing a vacation to accomplish this. Life's hustle takes a backseat and you’re able to just BE. The truth is, your bedroom can be just as rejuvenating as a week’s stay in a swanky hotel using Feng Shui.

If your bedroom’s causing you nothing but restlessness and heartache, read on. It’s time to take a look at the ancient wisdom of Feng Shui. Use these Feng Shui guidelines to create a chill hotel vibe without leaving home.

What is Feng Shui?

First, let’s understand what Feng Shui is and why it’s toats important for you to begin integrating into your life. Feng Shui’s roots travel back to ancient China. You’ll hear it referred to as both an art and science used to harmonize an individual with their surrounding environment. It whispers, “Be one with nature”.

It delves into the flow of energy, known as ch’i, to enhance the quality of one’s life. In connection with the bedroom, Feng Shui focuses on optimizing this space to enhance sleep quality, intimacy and overall well-being.

Sleep’s #1 Fan

Wanna know who’s the biggest fan of you getting a proper night’s sleep? Your health!

An article from the National Institutes of Health states that “good sleep improves your brain performance, mood and health”. The article further explains that poor sleep quality can lead to substantial health risks like heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

Thankfully, you’ve got Feng Shui in your back pocket.

A Space that Inspires

Let’s look into how Feng Shui can help you create a space that inspires restful sleep and keeps health issues at bay with the hotel vibe in mind.

Call in Balance

Symmetry creates that sense of balance everyone’s craving.  Its visual presence is like a drop of liquid GABA on the mind promoting harmonious flow of ch’i (that’s energy). Ensure nightstands, lamps and decor elements are symmetrically arranged on both sides of the bed. This encourages a feeling of equality and symbolically strengthens your partnership.

Embrace Soothing Colors

Color plays a fundamental role in influencing mood, energy levels and even how you feel. Opt for soft, calming hues such as serene blues, mellow greens or muted earth tones for the bedroom walls and decor. These colors induce tranquility, promoting R&R and deep sleep.

As for paint, try not to go too light - this will cause a reflective glare (light reflects light). If early mornings aren’t your thing, choose a darker hue that will absorb light.

You can upgrade your room’s color palate with a simple duvet cover swap. I’m loving these subdued hues from Calvin Klein’s Organic Earth Collection.

Include Natural Elements

Bringing elements of nature into the bedroom connects you with Earth's energy. Earth is seen as grounding and rejuvenating in Feng Shui tradition. Natural materials such as stone and wood in furniture will enhance your connection with nature (“Be one with nature…”). Incorporate indoor plants (try this one!) to purify the air and add vitality to your space.

Add candles, like this phthalate-free soy wax one from Anecdote Candles, for that lil’ something extra. Hang the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign and breathe in.

Enhance Lighting

Lighting is a total game changer (just ask any influencer - that ring light is permanently lit!). It can make or break the mood and ch’i of the bedroom. Hotels utilize multiple lighting types to cater to your needs - day or night.

Use ambient lighting. It’s a must as it provides general lighting to your entire space.

Choose a combination of task or accent lighting to create a layered effect. Luckily, you can get the look using battery powered wall sconces like this modern set.

Dimmability is preferred allowing for flexibility and the ability to adjust the lighting according to your mood. Instant vibe enhancer!

Minimize Electronics

This is a biggie!

Electronics emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that can disrupt the natural flow of ch’i, or energy, in the bedroom. Minimize electronic devices such as TVs, laptops and cellphones to encourage a serene sleep environment.

If your ears won’t be satisfied without listening in on the latest sleep meditation that Calm just dropped, keep your phone at a distance from the bed.

“Where’s your bed at?”

The bed is of utmost importance in Feng Shui tradition starting with where the bed’s positioned. Optimal bed placement promotes a sense of security, stability and great design.

Think about it - does it feel comfortable laying in bed without sight of the door?  Moms, you get this.

It’s ideal to see who’s standing in your doorway (especially if it’s a kiddo in need of a bucket!). Position the bed diagonally opposite the door, allowing a clear view of the entrance. Just make sure it's not directly in line with it - too much direct ch’i will be coming your way.

The bed also symbolizes you and your relationship. Yep!

A disheveled bed is suggestive of a messy love life. Which leads me to my next point…

Declutter for Clarity

A clutter-free environment is essential for cultivating positive ch’i. If you takeaway anything from this blog post, remember this: declutter, declutter, declutter! It’s the foundation of a great night’s sleep and Feng Shui living. Hotel rooms are known for providing the minimum essentials - and that’s it. Do the same in the bedroom and you’re sure to catch some extra zzzzzs.

Remove unnecessary items (e.g., anything you no longer use, love or need), especially from under the bed. We want those feel-good vibes flowing freely throughout your space!

Keep surfaces clear and organized to encourage a sense of calmness and clarity in the space.
